Vrendif is a villain, along with Stella. Only Vrendif could be called more of a side-kick than a villain himself. Of course, he’s evil, ruthless, and everything a true villain is. Only Stella is double, maybe even triple his evil, so next to her he looks pretty tame.
In book two, Vrendif and Stella were a perfect pairing. Only in the third book, something happens to Vrendif that catches Stella totally and completely off-guard, and she has absolutely no idea what’s going on. So she thinks that Vrendif has betrayed her, but try as he might, he can’t tell Stella what actually happened.
Before then, Vrendif was always backing up Stella, always helping her with curses, hexes and the like. They were perfect partners. Stella creates her own charms, and Vrendif finds ways to bend the rules of the spell, or how to summon it without speaking aloud.
Vrendif can be a huge pain. He’s completely obnoxious, towards Anaita and Ivlan at least, and most of the other good guys. He’s got this attitude that makes you want to walk right up to him and punch him in the face. Of course, you can’t, because Stella will hex you to death if you dare lay a finger on him.
